Benjamin Eidelson, a scholar of constitutional law and legal theory, has joined the Harvard Law School faculty as an assistant professor, effective July 1. Trained in both law and philosophy, Eidelson specializes in questions at the intersection of the two disciplines.

Andrew Manuel Crespo ’08 has been promoted to professor of law at Harvard Law School, effective July 1, 2019. Crespo, who joined the faculty as an assistant professor in 2015, is the first Latino to be promoted to a tenured position on the HLS faculty.

Harvard Law School’s incoming class of students will get a head start on their legal studies this summer. The school will soon launch the second iteration of its Zero-L program—a first-of-its kind curriculum of online courses designed to give new students some legal basics and a roadmap of what to expect once they arrive on campus. I caught up with professor Glenn Cohen, who developed Zero-L with associate dean for strategic initiatives Jessica Soban at the direction of Dean John Manning, to talk about the program and how it’s evolving after the pilot last summer.

Adam Sherman has joined Harvard Law School as the assistant dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs, overseeing the HLS Office of Academic Affairs. He joined HLS in August, and previously worked at the University of Washington Evans School of Public Policy and Governance, where he served most recently as Assistant Dean of Institutional Studies and Academic Services.

Mark C. Jefferson has been appointed assistant dean for Community Engagement and Equity at Harvard Law School. Jefferson previously served HLS as director of Community Engagement and Equity and was promoted to Assistant Dean effective October 30.

Harvard Law Unveils New Building for Legal Clinics, Research Programs

Harvard Law School Dean John F. Manning ’82 unveiled a new building slated to house several clinics, programs, and faculty offices at a reception early last week...D. James Greiner, a Law professor and Faculty Director of the Access of Justice Lab, said he is excited to move out of Wasserstein and into the much-needed new space. The new building is in part meant to accommodate the tremendous growth of clinical learning programs in recent years. "We’re currently in two different, small, basement offices, so the new office space is welcome,” Greiner wrote in an email. “We work with about 60 law, undergraduate, and graduate students at any one time, so the meeting spaces the new building offers are also quite welcome.”

Harvard Law School Celebrates 65 Years of Female Graduates

Harvard Law School celebrated its bicentennial last year, but women were not fully included in that history for more than a century. The first class of women graduated from the school in 1953 — and 65 years later, Law School alumnae, students, and professors gathered last Friday and Saturday to celebrate the anniversary...Elizabeth Papp Kamali ’97, an assistant professor at the Law School, wrote in an email that she was “heartened” to see many of her former classmates and commented on the great advances women have made in the past 65 years.“While 1953 seems like shockingly recent history, one recurring theme throughout the celebration was the incredible strides women have made within the law in the last half century,” Kamali wrote...Rebecca F. Prager, a third-year Law student, said she wished that more students had been a part of this “amazing experience.”...Law School Dean of Students Marcia L. Sells wrote in a statement that “students were involved in every step of the process” and “forg[ed] connections” with many of the alumnae....Dean of the Law School John F. Manning ’82 also commented via a spokesperson on Celebration 65, calling it “inspiring.”

The American Law Institute has elected John Manning ’85, Harvard Law School Morgan and Helen Chu Dean and Professor of Law, as a member. Manning and four Harvard Law School graduates were five of 34 new members elected this year.
