Harvard Law School Dean John F. Manning ’85 continues to grow HLS’s superb faculty.
Effective Jan. 1, three faculty members were promoted and two new scholars joined the HLS faculty. Sabrineh Ardalan ’02, who teaches in the fields of immigration and refugee law and advocacy, and Emily Broad Leib ’08, a food law expert and founder of the HLS Food Law and Policy Clinic, were named clinical professors of law. Ardalan was also named faculty director of the Harvard Immigration and Refugee Clinical Program. Eloise Lawrence was named an assistant clinical professor and deputy faculty director of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau. Two professors joined the HLS faculty this January. Nicholas Stephanopoulos, an expert of election law and constitutional law, joined HLS as a professor of law, and Daniel Tarullo, a former governor of the Federal Reserve, joined HLS as the Nomura Professor of International Financial Regulatory Practice.
Manning said, “These five outstanding members of our faculty reflect an extraordinary range of talent—great teachers, scholars, lawyers, and public policy specialists whose diverse methodologies and approaches to a vast array of important legal issues will further strengthen our community and continue to set Harvard Law School apart.”

Sabrineh Ardalan ’02
Sabrineh Ardalan ’02, who teaches in the fields of immigration and refugee law and advocacy, was appointed a clinical professor of law at Harvard Law School and faculty director of the Harvard Immigration and Refugee Clinical Program (HIRC). Ardalan, formerly an assistant clinical professor and assistant director of HIRC, succeeds Deborah Anker LL.M. ’84, HIRC founder and inaugural faculty director.
At HLS, Ardalan teaches courses on immigration, U.S. asylum law, international refugee law, international labor migration, and trauma, refugees and asylum. In her clinical work, she supervises and trains law students in direct client representation, appellate litigation, research, and policy advocacy.
She has written amicus briefs on cutting-edge issues in U.S. immigration and asylum law submitted to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Board of Immigration Appeals, federal district courts, circuit courts of appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. Ardalan initiated the clinic’s interdisciplinary approach, partnering with an on-site social worker, and currently oversees and collaborates closely with the clinic’s social work staff as part of her teaching and client advocacy. Emily Broad Leib ’08
Emily Broad Leib ’08, founder and director of the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC), was named clinical professor of law. She was formerly an assistant clinical professor at HLS.
A national leader in food law and policy, Broad Leib founded the first food law and policy clinic in the country at Harvard Law School. She has used her position to advocate for improvements to the laws and policies that govern America’s food system, including in the area of food waste.
Broad Leib also serves as deputy director of the Harvard Law School Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation, which she joined in 2010 as a senior clinical fellow. Read the full announcement
Eloise Lawrence
Eloise Lawrence
Eloise Lawrence, a community lawyering advocate, was named assistant clinical professor of law and deputy faculty director of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau (HLAB), a student-run civil legal aid organization founded in 1913.
Lawrence joined HLAB at the height of the foreclosure crisis in 2011 to work with students and community organizers to defend hundreds of families—homeowners and tenants who were losing their homes due to foreclosure. During the crisis, her cases involved predatory lending, improper foreclosure practices, discrimination, and unfair practices in the servicing of loans. She also worked hand-in-hand with organizers to advocate for policy changes at the local, state and federal level.
At HLS, Lawrence co-teaches Housing Law and Policy on a biennial basis and is a member of the HLAB teaching team for courses specifically geared towards HLAB student attorneys. Read the full announcement
Nicholas Stephanopoulos
Nicholas Stephanopoulos, an expert on election law and constitutional law, has joined Harvard Law School as professor of law, effective Jan. 1. He was previously a professor of law and the Herbert and Marjorie Fried Research Scholar at the University of Chicago Law School.
Stephanopoulos’ research and teaching interests include election law, constitutional law, legislation, administrative law, comparative law, and local government law. He has been involved in several litigation efforts, including a pair of partisan gerrymandering lawsuits based in part on his academic work that both recently reached the Supreme Court. Daniel Tarullo
Daniel Tarullo
Daniel K. Tarullo, a specialist in international economic regulation, banking law, and international law, was appointed the Nomura Professor of International Financial Regulatory Practice.
In addition to having served in key roles in the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Commerce Department, the White House, and the U.S. Senate, Tarullo also served as a member of the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Open Market Committee from January 2009 to 2017. As oversight governor for supervision and regulation, Tarullo led the Federal Reserve Board’s financial regulatory reforms, including implementation of the Dodd-Frank Act, and revamped the Federal Reserve’s approach to the supervision of systemically important financial institutions. He was the Federal Reserve’s representative to the international Financial Stability Board, including serving four years as chair of its Committee on Supervision and Regulation.
