“Access to Justice,” the Winter 2019 issue of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences journal Dædalus, features twenty-four essays by leading experts in the field, including Harvard Law School alumni and faculty. It is the first open access issue of the publication.

The American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS) has announced that Ambassador Samantha Power '99, diplomat, academic, and human rights advocate, will receive the 2019 Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize in Social Science and Public Policy.

John J. Gibbons ’50, a former federal judge who argued for rights for Guantánamo detainees and dedicated his five-decade career to protecting the rule of law in the United States, died Dec. 9. He was 94.

This fall, Harvard Law School has announced two senior administrative appointments: Mark C. Jefferson was appointed assistant dean for Community Engagement and Equity at Harvard Law School, and Adam Sherman has joined Harvard Law School as the assistant dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs, overseeing the HLS Office of Academic Affairs.

He joined HLS in August, and previously worked at the University of Washington Evans School of Public Policy and Governance, where he served most recently as Assistant Dean of Institutional Studies and Academic Services.

Mark C. Jefferson has been appointed assistant dean for Community Engagement and Equity at Harvard Law School. Jefferson previously served HLS as director of Community Engagement and Equity and was promoted to Assistant Dean effective October 30.

In October, Harvard Law School's Mock Trial Team won first place at the 2018 Lone Star Classic, an annual invitational mock trial tournament hosted by St. Mary's University School of Law, in San Antonio, Texas.

At an award ceremony on Oct. 18, Clinical Professor Esme Caramello ’99, faculty director of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, was honored as one of the 2018 Top Women of Law by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.

U.S. Circuit Court Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, who has taught courses at Harvard Law School each year since 2008, has been nominated by President Donald J. Trump to fill the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy ’61.
