Haylie Jacobson will be working at the Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights (LCCR), the juvenile public defender for the city of New Orleans. At LCCR, Haylie will help develop a Strategic Litigation project, focusing on systemic litigation to challenge both new and entrenched practices and policies in the juvenile system that are actively harming young people in New Orleans. The Strategic Litigation project will be rooted in the knowledge and understanding that Louisiana’s juvenile justice system was built and is perpetuated as a means to punish and control Black children and their families. The work of the Strategic Litigation project will be guided by the long-term goal of dismantling this racist system and achieving justice for those the system has harmed. At Harvard Law School, Haylie was a Student Attorney with the Prison Legal Assistance Project, where she represented Massachusetts prisoners in parole and disciplinary proceedings, and with the Criminal Justice Institute, where she represented indigent clients in Roxbury District Court and Dorchester Juvenile Court. Haylie spent her law school summers at the Capital Habeas Unit of the Federal Community Defender for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and at LCCR. She received her B.S. in Culture and Politics from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service.
