Computer Equipment Management
ITS keeps a record of all computers and printers deployed by ITS into the HLS environment. Information on these computers includes model, purchase date, warranty expiration date, location, etc. These computers are assigned to a user or a department. Faculty and staff may view their inventory in the HLS Services Hub by clicking on "My Assets" in the menu bar. Department IT contacts can view all department assets by clicking "Department Assets" in the HLS Services Hub.
Desktop Backup Services
ITS offers two back-up services to users:
Video Conferencing – Computer Based
ITS can assist all faculty, staff, and students with video conferencing via their laptop or desktop computers through Zoom.
Electronic Waste Removal/Disposal
ITS collects electronic waste and works with Harvard Recycling to dispose of it in an environmentally safe way. Electronic waste includes computers and peripherals, used toner cartridges, batteries, light bulbs, mobile devices, etc. ITS will pickup computer equipment that HLS faculty and staff no longer use. All other items can be brought to the ITS Service Desk.
Encryption
Hard-drive encryption is a security protocol used to protect HLS data stored on a hard drive using specialized software, such as Bitlocker or FileVault. Data on an encrypted hard drive cannot be read by anyone who does not have access to the appropriate key or password.
General Computer Training
User computer related training is available at the following locations:
Hardware Recommendations and Consulting
ITS provides computer hardware and peripheral device recommendations to HLS faculty and applicable departments. ITS staff schedule individual consultations, prior to a HLS computer upgrade, to recommend computer hardware appropriate to an individual's workflow and software needs.
ITS Service Desk
Customers seeking any information technology services only have to reach out to a single point of contact. Customers do not have to understand the nature of specific teams within ITS; the technicians at the Service Desk will be knowledgeable about how to handle any ITS request. The Service Desk technicians will direct customer requests appropriately within ITS for the customer, assuring that those requests connect with the correct resources.
Loaner Equipment
Faculty and Staff can borrow a PC or Mac laptop, as well as sprint cards, in the event that they need a portable computer for work purposes. Students can borrow a laptop during exam periods only on a first come, first served basis.
Mobile Device Support
The HLS Service Desk will support configuration and troubleshooting of mobile devices (Smartphones and Tablets).
Multifunction (Print/Scan/Copy/Fax)
High-volume printing, copying, and scanning services via Ricoh multifunction devices.
Student Hardware Support
ITS will attempt to provide support for hardware devices that are not part of our standard hardware provision on a "best effort" basis. Where applicable, we will assist you in communicating with a vendor.
Non-Standard Operating System Support
ITS will attempt to provide support for Operating Systems that are not part of our standard computer deployments on a "best effort" basis.
Nonstandard Software Support
ITS will purchase and install non-standard software if it is compatible with the standard ITS computer setup. ITS will attempt to provide support for applications that are not part of our standard software provision on a "best effort" basis.
Office Moves
ITS will prepare and pack computers and peripherals before an office move. ITS will unpack and setup computers and peripherals at the new office location as well. ITS may move equipment for single person moves but movers will relocate the equipment for larger moves.
Patch Management
Patch Management is used to push Windows updates to HLS owned computers. Keeping computers up to date is important, as this can prevent security and operational failures.
Printing
ITS provides local and networked monochrome and color print services.
