HLS staff with J.D.s and/or experience in legal research and writing are warmly invited to serve as volunteer judges for the First-Year Ames Moot Court Competition, taking place April 13–16, 2026.
Ames is a cornerstone of the 1L experience and a formative moment for our students. Volunteer judges hear brief appellate arguments, pose questions from the bench, and offer supportive feedback in a collegial, low-pressure environment.
No prior judging or courtroom experience is required. This is an educational exercise for students, not a formal competition, and many of our judges are colleagues from across the HLS community. All materials—including briefs, case record, and a concise bench guide—will be provided to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Why volunteer?
- Support students at a pivotal academic milestone
- Engage with legal advocacy in an accessible, low-prep format
- Enjoy dinner with fellow judges before arguments each evening
- Participate in a longstanding HLS tradition
Please sign up by March 20. Judge panels are filled on a first-response basis, and early volunteers have the greatest flexibility in selecting their preferred evening.
Thank you for supporting our students and helping bring this curricular tradition to life!
