The Harvard Law School community commemorated the 10th anniversary of September 11th with a candlelight vigil on Sunday, September 11 on Jarvis Field. Hosted by Harvard Law School Dean Martha Minow, it was a moment for students, faculty and staff to come together and reflect on the events of that day and the years that followed.

Prior to the gathering on Jarvis Field, many of the attendees remembered U.S. military currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. At an event “In Memory of 9/11: Sign for a Solider,” sponsored by the Harvard Law School Republicans, members of the HLS community signed cards and wrote letters.

In addition to the law school vigil, a number of events were held across the university to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks. Several hundred people gathered in Tercentenary Theater for a memorial service. Earlier in the day, the Office of the President and the Mahindra Humanities Center sponsored “The Art of Survival: A 10th Anniversary of 9/11 in Words, Music and Dance,” which included an original performance by Harvard’s new director of dance and readings from the poetry of Jorie Graham and W.H. Auden, and letters from American soldiers in Iraq.

Throughout the week, the law school and student journals and organizations will be hosting a series of events commemorating September 11, including an address by the former Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff ‘78 and a two-day conference, “Law, Security, and Liberty after 9/11: Looking to the Future,” featuring dozens of national security experts who have played firsthand roles in the development and analysis of national and international security.

Through this conference, the law school will inaugurate the newly established Harvard Law School-Brookings Project on Law and Security. This project, much like the conference itself, aims to address questions of national and international security through an interdisciplinary lens, bringing together academics, government experts, civil society, media, and other interested actors.
