Harvard Law School Professor Hal Scott’s Program on International Financial Systems is hosting the 9th annual “Symposium on Building the Financial System of the Twenty-first Century: An Agenda for Europe and the United States” this weekend in Hampshire, England. Co-hosted by the Centre for European Policy Studies, the event will gather more than 100 senior executives and government officials from the financial industry, policymaking arenas, law, and academia.
Specific topics for the symposium include Bridging Europe and the U.S. on Derivatives and Securitization; Cross Border Resolution of Bank Failures; The Regulation of Non-Bank Financial Institutions and Perspectives on the Sovereign Debt Crisis.
“Given the ongoing policy responses to the financial crisis in the U.S. and Europe, we expect to have a very dynamic and important dialogue at the Symposium, which will broaden our understanding on key issues relating to capital markets, financial regulation, and international finance,” said Scott. “This is a very valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and views across the Atlantic and I look forward to an outstanding dialogue.”
Sheila Bair, Chairman, U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation will open the proceedings with a keynote speech. Also from the public sector roster of speakers will be Nadia Calviño, deputy director general, DG Internal Markets and Services, European Commission; and Mark Hoban, member of parliament, Fareham, UK and financial secretary to HM Treasury, who will speak at lunch on Friday, March 25.
Karel Lannoo, CEO, CEPS, said: “The high participation in the Symposium indicates that the EU-US regulatory dialogue is alive and well. The symposium will be a tremendous opportunity for a mid-term review of the responses to the crisis on both sides of the Atlantic, and for a better understanding where responses are converging or diverging.”
Private sector keynote speeches will be delivered by Sir David Wright, vice chairman of Barclays Capital and Peter Fisher ’85, vice chairman and head of global fixed income portfolio management, BlackRock, Inc.
