Professor Emeritus Roger Fisher and lecturer Daniel Shapiro are this year’s recipients of the prestigious Cloke-Millen Award. The prize — formerly called the “Peacemaker of the Year” award — honors outstanding professionals working in mediation, negotiation or dispute resolution, and is given out by the Southern California Mediation Association.

In attendance to receive the award, Shapiro also delivered the keynote address at the SCMA annual meeting. In his remarks, Shapiro discussed the five core concerns from their book Beyond Reason — appreciation, affiliation, autonomy, status, role — as they relate to mediation.

Beyond Reason, which Shapiro co-authored with Fisher, is a follow-up to Fisher’s own ground-breaking book on negotiation “Getting to Yes,” published in 1981.
