Harvard Law School Professor Hal Scott’s Program on International Financial Systems (PIFS) hosted the 10th annual Symposium on Building the Financial System of the Twenty-first Century: An Agenda for Europe and the United States on March 22-24 at the Weill Center in Armonk, N.Y.  Co-hosted by the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), the event gathered 100 senior executives and government officials from the financial industry, policymaking arenas, law, and academia.

Specific topics for the symposium included:

  • The Future of the Eurozone
  • Macroprudential Supervision
  • Comparison of Derivatives Regulation in the EU and the U.S.
  • Comparison of Bank Resolution in the EU and the U.S.

Scott said of the Symposium, “We had a good discussion on the future of the Euro, as well as a dynamic and important dialogue at the Symposium, which broadened our understanding on key issues relating to capital markets, financial regulation, and international finance.  The Symposium provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and views across the Atlantic.”

Public sector keynote speeches were delivered by Antonio de Lecea, Minster, Economic and Financial Affairs Delegation of the European Union to the U.S.; William Dudley, President and Chief Executive Officer, Federal Reserve Bank of New York; Vitor Constancio, Vice President, European Central Bank;  and Marisa Lago, Assistant Secretary for International Markets and Development, U.S. Department of Treasury.

Karel Lannoo of CEPS said: “The Symposium provides a good opportunity to update and exchange views on regulatory developments on both sides of the Atlantic. From legislation, the crisis response has moved to implementation, where many details matter.”

Mr. Lewis Kaden, Vice Chairman of Citi, delivered the private sector keynote.
