Harvard Law School’s faculty earned the top ranking for the number of academic papers authored and downloaded on the Social Science Research Network (SSRN), according to cumulative statistics (SSRN user login required) recently released for 2009. Work by HLS faculty was downloaded 120,753 times over the course of the year – more than double the number of Columbia Law School’s faculty, which is in second place.

In addition, HLS faculty members captured 11 out of the top 100 individual law author (login required) slots based on number of downloads of their work.

The top 100 law school professors included:

  • Lucian Bebchuk (ranked 1 among law school professors and 6 among all authors);
  • Cass Sunstein (ranked 4 among law school professors and 18 among all authors);
  • Reinier Kraakman (15 among law school professors, 69 among all authors);
  • Steven Shavell (20 among law school professors, 106 among all authors);
  • Allen Ferrell (25 among law school professors, 130 among all authors);
  • Jesse Fried (27 among law school professors, 139 among all authors);
  • Mark Roe (34 among law school professors, 177 among all authors);
  • Alma Cohen (39 among law school professors, 195 among all authors);
  • Jonathan Zittrain (49 among law school professors, 263 among all authors);
  • Adrian Vermeule (60 among law school professors, 378 among all authors); and
  • Louis Kaplow (68 among law school professors, 396 among all authors).

SSRN is the leading electronic service for social science research, and its electronic library contains (as of December 2009) over 219,300 full-text documents by more than 85,000 authors.
