David Kris ’91 has been appointed head of the Department of Justice’s two-year-old National Security division by President Barack Obama ’91. The division is responsible for the department’s counterterrorism, counterespionage, and intelligence efforts.
Currently senior vice president, deputy general counsel and chief compliance officer at Time Warner Inc., Kris was an associate deputy attorney general from 2000 until 2003. In that position, his unclassified duties included supervising the government’s use of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), representing the Department of Justice at the National Security Council, and assisting the Attorney General in conducting oversight of the U.S. Intelligence community. He is also an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center.
Kris has been working on the new Administration’s Justice Department transition team, specializing in national security issues. He also served as a national security adviser to Sen. Hillary Clinton during her presidential run.
A graduate of Haverford College, Kris clerked for Judge Stephen Trott of the Ninth Circuit after law school.
Kris joins a growing list of HLS alumni at the Department of Justice and in the Administration.
