A weekend in Alaska. An autographed Legally Blonde script. A ride in a vintage airplane. Dinner with Professor Alan Dershowitz. These are just some of the more than 300 items up for bid at the 10th Annual Public Interest Auction at Harvard Law School on Thursday, April 10. Silent auction bidding begins at 5:30 p.m. in Austin Hall, and the live auction starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Ames Courtroom.
“The growth of the Auction over the past 10 years is emblematic of Harvard Law School’s continuing and expanding commitment to public interest work,” said Dean Robert Clark. “By combining the resources of students, faculty, alumni and staff, the Auction is a great way to rally support for public interest from the entire law school community. I am excited to be a part of the event once again this year.”
The student-run HLS Public Interest Auction raises funds to support students pursuing unpaid public service work during the summer. Last year’s event raised $120,000 to help fund more than 200 students who spent their summer working in public interest law.
“We are extremely excited about this year’s auction,” said Andrew Krause, auction co-chair. “While our ultimate goal is to raise as much money as possible, we also expect that the auction will be a celebration of public interest work. An extremely dedicated group of first-year students has been working for months to make this event a success, and we have been very pleased with the support we have received from the law school community, the local Cambridge community and supporters of public interest legal work from all over the country.”
Professors Elena Kagan and David Barron will serve as auctioneers. Kagan, who will become dean of Harvard Law School on July 1, also will auction off a poker night with her, a popular item in years past.
Other items up for bid include a copy of a Bush v. Gore brief signed by its author, Professor Laurence Tribe; a cruise on San Francisco Bay; and a week in a condo on Cape Cod. Law student donations include home-cooked meals, a palm reading, dance lessons, and much more.
