Who We Are
Founded in 1981, Race Forward is a national not-for-profit organization that catalyzes movement building for racial justice. In partnership with communities, organizations, and a broad range of sectors, Race Forward builds strategies and tools to advance racial justice in our policies, institutions, and culture. Race Forward’s flagship program, the Government Alliance on Race and Equity, is a national network of local and state governments that support racial equity practitioners within public agencies and institutions to transform government to create a racially just and equitable society.
Race Forward’s Legal Department provides comprehensive in-house legal services to the organization, including each of its initiatives, administrative departments, and programs, and to its Board of Trustees.
Race Forward seeks a law student to work with its Legal Department as a part-time legal extern during the Spring of 2023.
Who You Are
You will report to the General Counsel and will work with the entire Legal Department to provide legal advice and assistance to the General Counsel and staff. You will focus on reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts, helping develop organizational policies and practices, and providing research and advice on employment and labor law, intellectual property law, non-profit law, cyber and data privacy law, and corporate governance and board development matters. In addition, you will help draft legal training materials and will participate in meetings with outside counsel.
You are a 2L or 3L at an A.B.A.-accredited U.S. law school, and are creative, practical, and skilled. You are interested in how not-for-profits work, and you want to use your talents—which include artful drafting and horse sense—for a great cause. Race Forward works to automate as many contractual and legal processes as possible, so you will be adept with technology and enjoy the creative challenge of improving operations. Strong writing, oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are a must.
This position is fully remote with occasional opportunities for in-person meetings and convenings.
Applicants must be able to fund their externship with either a fellowship/stipend or through academic credit. For those who need to earn academic credit, Race Forward will gladly assist in working with the school or program to make arrangements to meet requirements.
How to apply
Please submit a resume and writing sample in one PDF document to email@example.com. Submission of multiple documents will not be accepted.
Applications should be received by December 31, 2022 and will be considered on a rolling basis. Applications received after the deadline will be considered if the externship remains unfilled after all on-time applications have been considered. No phone calls, please. Only applicants selected for interviews will be contacted.
