The Office of Career Services (OCS) offers numerous ways to connect with HLS students including OCS hosted events, podcasts, and programming. Harvard Law School’s Student Organizations are very active and host many employer events as well.

Spring 2023 Student Engagement Opportunities

  • Virtual Chats

Virtual chats may be hosted during lunchtime, from 12:30 – 1:30pm ET.

Employers must receive OCS approval for Harvard only virtual chats to ensure that the event will not conflict with other virtual chats, receptions, or other events that could impact attendance.

The suggested format of a chat is a 45-minute – 1-hour session that begins with a 15-minute overview of the firm followed by two 15 or 20- minute breakout sessions by geographic market where students are able to choose which breakout session(s) to attend. Employers may use their own video platform to host the chat session or request that OCS set up a zoom session and turn over hosting to a firm representative 15 minutes prior to the start of the chat.

There is a $100 sponsorship fee for virtual chats. Register for a Virtual Chat here.

  • In-person Receptions

Receptions are firm hosted off-campus events and can be in the form of an event at a restaurant, a bowling night at a bowling alley, a short film viewing at a local theater or even a gourmet coffee tasting. Harvard Square and the surrounding areas offer a range of quality restaurants and venues from which to choose when hosting an off-campus event.

For venue ideas, please see https://www.harvardsquare.com/

Employers must receive OCS approval for Harvard only receptions to ensure that the event will not conflict with other chats, receptions, or other events that could impact attendance.

Register for an In-person Reception here.

  • Sponsored Coffee

Sponsored Coffee allows firms to set up a table outside of OCS during the spring semester to provide coffee (and/or snacks) to students and have casual drop-in style conversations with interested students.

There is a $100 sponsorship fee for Sponsored Coffee.

    Register for Sponsored Coffee here.

  • Attorney Office Hours

Firms may send 1-2 attorneys in the spring semester for a half or full day at OCS. Students will sign up in advance for 15 minute time slots to speak with attorneys to learn more about their firm, practice area, and any advice they have for law students.

There is a $100 sponsorship fee for Attorney Office Hours.

OCS Signature Events

  • Masterclass: The Unspoken Rules

This fall semester event is designed to introduce first-year students to the techniques that will allow them to be successful on the job and during the interview process. Students participate in an informative program about navigating networking events and then immediately flow into a networking reception with participating attorneys. Students learn more about sponsor firms while practicing their newfound skills. A sponsorship commitment is required of participating firms.

  • 1L Mock Interview Program

This November program provides students with an opportunity to get real feedback from practicing attorneys on how to refine their interview skills. Attorneys meet with approximately 4 students via Flo Recruit (virtual interview platform) and conduct 30 minute mock interviews. Scheduling is coordinated by OCS.

  • Market Mixer

This event is a networking reception that draws attorney representatives from firms in a variety of target geographic regions which facilitates 1L and employer relationships. Geographic regions represented include: New York, Washington, D.C., Northern and Southern California, Chicago, and Boston. It is the premiere spring semester event heading into the recruiting season. A sponsorship commitment is required.

Podcasts

The OCS website includes recorded podcasts from law firms and other legal employers for students to download. These instructional podcasts feature short interviews with firm representatives and cover practice areas, practice settings, professionalism, and on-the-job skills. These podcasts are crafted to give students an opportunity to learn more about a subject from practicing attorneys.

Please note that the opinions expressed in the podcasts and any materials linked therewith represent the views of the speakers and do not necessarily represent those of the Office of Career Services, Harvard Law School or Harvard University.

Publicity & Marketing Materials

OCS will publicize chats, receptions and other firm events (including firm hosted multi-school events when appropriate).

Additionally, firms may submit any written or video marketing materials to be uploaded to the Symplicity Employer Resource Library for students. We will accept materials on a rolling basis and upload to Symplicity at any time during the spring semester. To submit materials, please email them to recruiting@law.harvard.edu.

*Please note that materials submitted in the spring and summer of 2022 have expired and have been removed from the library.

OCS Publicity will consist of the following:

  • A listing in Symplicity where students RSVP for events (for chats and receptions)
  • A listing on the OCS events and the university calendar (for chats and receptions)
  • Weekly posts on the OCS blog for students (for chats, receptions, other firm events and resource library materials)
