Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts seeks to hire one in-person extern for Fall 2022 academic term. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Finalists will be asked to come to chambers for a short interview. Decisions will be made on a rolling basis but likely by the end of January.
Externships typically run 10-12 weeks. Start dates are flexible, but generally externs have committed to be in chambers during the fall academic calendar term. Externs are expected to be in Judge Gorton’s chambers in Boston two or three days each week, depending on the student’s schedule.
Unfortunately, judicial internships are unpaid.
Internship Description:
Interns are primarily responsible for preparing bench memoranda for pretrial, status and scheduling conferences as well as sentencing hearings. To complete those memoranda, interns will review case files and summarize the legal and factual issues raised in any pending motions. Interns will also attend those hearings.
Interns will also be assigned some longer writing projects over the term, including writing draft opinions, as well as miscellaneous legal research tasks. Specific projects will be assigned based on interest and availability. Interns are also frequently asked to assist with preparing for and conducting trials.
Interns work primarily with Judge Gorton’s law clerks and other court staff, but also directly with the Judge.
