Episode 16: Reem Al-Khalqi, Part 1

Reem Al-Khalqi, Software Developer, ITS

In the first of this two part episode, Reem talks to Edgar about her childhood.  She grew up in Yemen until the age of 10. She shares her memories of times with cousins and neighbors and all of the wonderful food, such as Injera bread. We learn about the religious celebrations that have great importance in her life, including Eid al-Fitr (soon after Ramadan ends) and Eid al-Adha (around 2 months after Eid al-Fitr).

When she moved to Athens, Ohio, she had to make a lot of adjustments. She was posed with the challenges of language and wearing a hijab. She faced bullying and prejudice, but does share a story of the community supporting her mother and her.

Stay tuned for her second episode.
