The Salon: “Abraham between Torah and Gospel” with Professor Jon D. Levenson

April 29, 2025

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join Professor Jon D. Levenson, Albert A. List Professor of Jewish Studies, Harvard Divinity School, for dinner and a conversation on “Abraham between Torah and Gospel” at The Salon.

The figure of Abraham, known primarily from the Book of Genesis, is often described as the common father of Jews and Christians and thus the founder of a “Judeo-Christian tradition.” Judaism and Christianity have, however, often interpreted the Abrahamic narratives of Genesis in ways that are different and sometimes diametrically opposed. To complicate the picture even more, some currents in both traditions sound themes that are actually more characteristic of the other one, and this should warn both communities against oversimplifying their own heritage—and that of the other community as well.

The Salon offers a space and opportunity for dialogue and inquiry around critical theological questions. Featuring guest speakers with expertise in particular areas of Christian theological inquiry, The Salon invites and challenges the Harvard community to engage, consider, and debate biblical ideas that continue to shape the course of history, our society, values, and lives.

Please request to register here in advance. Due to limited space and high demand, registration requests will be reviewed and confirmation emails will be sent the week of the event.
