The Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence Legal Advocacy and Representation Program currently seeks law school students interested in pursuing a spring semester part-time or full-time volunteer opportunity or externship and have a demonstrated passion for public interest and immigrant rights work on behalf of Asian communities. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to social, racial, economic, and language justice while also possessing excellent research, writing and communication skills. This volunteer opportunity/externship is currently remote.

Our holistic legal program offers legal assistance to survivors of gender-based violence, sexual assault, and intimate partner human trafficking. With cultural humility, we provide legal assistance in immigration, divorce, child custody and support, abuse prevention, tenant rights, consumer rights, and public benefits matters. Through legal advocacy, counseling, and representation the ATASK Legal Advocacy and Representation Program fights to secure the legal and human rights of Asian immigrants so that they can live free from violence and oppression by abusers.

Assignments in the aforementioned areas of law may include:

  • Conduct comprehensive client intakes and interviews
  • Conduct factual and legal research
  • Draft complaints, pleadings, and affidavits in family law, abuse prevention, immigration and consumer law matters
  • Draft legal memos and/or briefs
  • Assemble VAWA, U, and / or T visa applications
  • Develop and present legal trainings or workshops to domestic violence advocates

Students will receive detailed feedback on their legal work product and engage in thoughtful discussions with their supervisor on relevant legal principles and policy affecting Asian/Asian-American/API constituents.

Students will be supervised and mentored by the LARP Managing Attorney, Simone Bui. Simone has spent the past 20 years working with Asian immigrant victims in the areas of immigration, family, abuse prevention and poverty law. During that time, she has supervised and mentored a diverse spectrum of students, including graduate and law school students.

Deadline for the Spring semester is Friday January 21st, 2022. Please email cover letter and resume to Helen Ngo (helen@atask.org).
