If you are planning to join a large law firm for 1L summer, do you have a clear sense of the firm’s expectations for 2L summer? If all goes well this summer, does the firm require a “touchback,” meaning 2-4 weeks at the firm during 2L summer, to receive a permanent offer from the firm?

If you want to decline an offer, remember that even declining an offer is an opportunity to build your reputation and cultivate a relationship. Handle it professionally by following these guidelines.

At this point in the 1L summer job search, you may be receiving offers from some positions while still interviewing for others. If an employer has extended you an offer with a deadline that does not allow you enough time to interview with and decide between other employers, you may ask the first employer to extend their decision deadline.

The wide variety of options are one of the positive aspects of the 1L summer, but that same variety can cause stress when an employer gives you an offer with a quick deadline. What do you do when you get an offer for a summer position, but you still have some outstanding interviews scheduled?
