Lindsay Bailey will spend her fellowship year with the Center for Justice and Accountability (CJA) in San Francisco, California working with victims of torture and other human rights violations seeking civil remedies under the Alien Tort Statute and Torture Victim Protection Act.
Lindsay has long been actively involved in international human rights focused organizations. Prior to HLS, Lindsay completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Politics and Governance at Ryerson University and spent three years in Ghana working with municipal governments to improve project planning, budgeting, and municipal taxes.
While in law school, Lindsay has spent four semesters in the International Human Rights Clinic, where she was a student attorney on Mamani, a federal lawsuit brought against the former president of Bolivia, Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada, and the former Minister of Defense, Carlos Sánchez Berzaín, for their respective roles in planning and ordering security forces in Bolivia to use deadly military force against unarmed civilians to suppress popular protests against government policies. Lindsay also spent a winter Independent Clinical with the Public International Law and Policy Group in Jordan as part of the Reginald F. Lewis Internship Program, working on transitional justice in Yemen. Lindsay was awarded the David Grossman Exemplary Clinical Student Team Award for her work in the human rights clinic.
Lindsay was a summer associate at the Public International law and Policy Group, where she worked with Tanzania and South Sudan projects on international human rights standards for detention of prisoners, corruption, and transitional justice, Schonbrun, Seplow, Harris & Hoffman LLP, where she worked on civil and human rights cases, and Oxfam America, where she researched and drafted memoranda on the regulation of foreign transfers of intellectual property, intellectual property regimes, access to medicine, and pharmaceutical companies’ tax practices in five countries.
Lindsay volunteered with HLS Advocates for Human Rights, where she was a researcher, project leader, and project coordinator, and the Law and International Development Society, where she was a researcher, symposium organizer, and President. She spent three semesters as a research assistant at the Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict. She also was an article editor on the Harvard Human Rights Journal and an article editor and Community Development Director for the Harvard International Law Journal. Last August, she published an article, “Can There Be an Accidental Extrajudicial Killing? Understanding standards of intent in the Torture Victim Protection Act” in the International Law Journal. Lindsay completed over 2,000 pro bono hours during her time at HLS, and was awarded a Dean’s Award for Community Leadership for her contributions to the law school community.
