This is a federal program. The recipient completes community service in exchange for financial assistance. This assistance can take the form of either federal educational loan repayment or payment for current educational expenses. The amount of assistance is dependent on the length of service performed. There are two distinct categories of benefits available to veterans. These are VA Educational Benefits to cover fixed costs like tuition, fees, health insurance, etc., and VA Non-Educational Benefits which usually take the form of a monthly stipend. This program offered by Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP awards law students with a salaried summer associate position during their 2L summer and a $50,000 scholarship. ($25,000 will be distributed during the students’ third year of law school, and a payment of the additional $25,000 will be awarded contingent upon receipt and acceptance of an offer of permanent employment).

The Fellowship consists of a salaried summer associate position in a domestic Kirkland office and a $15,000 stipend toward educational expenses during the fellows’s third year of law school. This merit-based fellowship will be awarded to one second year minority student at HLS who can demonstrate academic excellence and is likely to practice in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Washington D.C.

The Daniel H. Kossow Scholarship Award of $2,500 may be presented annually to the Harvard Law School student who shows an interest in entertainment law and most closely captures the spirit of Dan Kossow; a well respected and admired entertainment lawyer for over 40 years. Applications are generally sent to Student Financial Services in advance of the due date.

The Powell Scholar will be a summer associate in Lane Powell’s Seattle or Portland office and receive a $7,500 scholarship toward educational expenses during the scholar’s third year of law school. Candidates must be second year students who will contribute to the diversity of the legal community and have a demonstrated desire to practice law in the Seattle/Portland area.

The Society offers awards of $2,500 to third year law students of Italian descent who can demonstrate academic achievement, commitment to their communities, a desire to practice law in Massachusetts, and an interest in Italian-American issues. The Soros Fellowship for New Americans is given to recognize and assist today’s immigrants and the children of immigrants. It provides a yearly stipend of $20,000 and a tuition credit of $16,000 for up to three years of graduate study. Applications are available online.

McDermott Will & Emery will award a $15,000 scholarship and a position in a McDermott Summer Program to two second-year minority law students. Davis Wright Tremaine offers two scholarships to first year students of color, or others of diverse backgrounds. The scholarships consist of a paid summer clerkship in the firmâ’s Portland or Seattle office and $7,500 for the student’s second year educational expenses.

The Perkins Coie Student Fellowship is offered to first year law students who are members of racial, ethnic, disabled, and sexual orientation minority groups. Successful applicants will receive a $7,500 academic scholarship and a paid position with Perkins Coie LLP as a summer associate.

One first year minority law student will each receive a paid summer associate position with the firm and a $10,000 academic scholarship.

The firm will offer a fellowship to a first year law student who is a member of a racial or ethnic minority group. The fellowship provides the student selected with a position as an associate for their 1L summer with Tonkon Torp. To qualify for the $7,500 academic scholarship, the student associate must return to Tonkon Torp for their 2L summer. The scholarship will be paid for the student’s final year of law school.

This is a federal program, in which recipients may be nominated and selected in their junior year of college. The Porzio Diversity Scholarship of $5,000 supports the development of a first year law school student from New Jersey who embodies elevated values and demonstrates a commitment to academic excellence, leadership, community service and the advancement of diversity in the legal profession. The Thomas F. Black, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund is a one year, nonrenewable award of $15,000 for Rhode Island residents entering their first year of law school.

This scholarship is open to law students who will be entering their third year of law school who have obtained a CPA certificate. Awards range from $250 to $1,000.

The Institute offers a scholarship of $5,000 to a US citizen of Latino descent. Applicants must also demonstrate community service and financial need.

County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey Scholarship Foundation awards four scholarships of $2,500. Each will be awarded to New Jersey residents with financial need. Please note that each scholarship has specific eligibility requirements, as noted below. Applications are available online.
**The Cotton Memorial Scholarship is for applicants with an interest in pursuing a career as a prosecutor with an emphasis in Domestic Violence or Hate Crimes prosecutions.
**The Stamler Memorial Scholarship is intended for an applicant who as a sworn law enforcement officer is seeking educational advancement at the graduate level to improve his or her effectiveness in this role.
**The Rittenhouse Memorial Scholarship is for applicants with an interest in pursuing a career as a prosecutor.
**The Ruotolo Memorial Scholarship is for applicants with a demonstrated commitment to enhancing the rights and well- being of children through child advocacy programs.

This award of $15,000 will be given to a minority student completing the first year of law school with financial need and a demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in intellectual property law.
