The Student Financial Services Office maintains contact with organizations offering a wide variety of outside funding sources. We regularly post information about these on this web page and also in the HLS Administrative Updates. Below are the outside funding sources submitted to the HLS Student Financial Services Office in the past couple of years, listed in order by their previously reported due date.

  • Americorp Benefit

    This is a federal program. The recipient completes community service in exchange for financial assistance. This assistance can take the form of either federal educational loan repayment or payment for current educational expenses. The amount of assistance is dependent on the length of service performed.   • Veteran’s Administration Benefits

    There are two distinct categories of benefits available to veterans. These are VA Educational Benefits to cover fixed costs like tuition, fees, health insurance, etc., and VA Non-Educational Benefits which usually take the form of a monthly stipend.   • Diversity Scholars Programs (September Deadline)

    This program offered by Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP awards law students with a salaried summer associate position during their 2L summer and a $50,000 scholarship. ($25,000 will be distributed during the students’ third year of law school, and a payment of the additional $25,000 will be awarded contingent upon receipt and acceptance of an offer of permanent employment).

  • National Asian Pacific American Law Association (NAPABA)

    NAPABA awards scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $7,500 to law students who have demonstrated leadership and a commitment to the issues and needs of the Asian Pacific American community. Application forms can be found on their web site.

  • Kirkland & Ellis Minority Fellowship Program (October Deadline)

    The Fellowship consists of a salaried summer associate position in a domestic Kirkland office and a $15,000 stipend toward educational expenses during the fellows’s third year of law school. This merit-based fellowship will be awarded to one second year minority student at HLS who can demonstrate academic excellence and is likely to practice in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Washington D.C.

  • The Daniel H. Kossow Scholarship Award (October Deadline)

    The Daniel H. Kossow Scholarship Award of $2,500 may be presented annually to the Harvard Law School student who shows an interest in entertainment law and most closely captures the spirit of Dan Kossow; a well respected and admired entertainment lawyer for over 40 years. Applications are generally sent to Student Financial Services in advance of the due date.

  • Powell Diversity Scholarship Program (October Deadline)

    The Powell Scholar will be a summer associate in Lane Powell’s Seattle or Portland office and receive a $7,500 scholarship toward educational expenses during the scholar’s third year of law school. Candidates must be second year students who will contribute to the diversity of the legal community and have a demonstrated desire to practice law in the Seattle/Portland area.

  • Justinian Law Society Scholarship (November Deadline)

    The Society offers awards of $2,500 to third year law students of Italian descent who can demonstrate academic achievement, commitment to their communities, a desire to practice law in Massachusetts, and an interest in Italian-American issues. Applications are generally sent to Student Financial Services in advance of the due date.

  • Soros Fellowship (November Deadline)

    The Soros Fellowship for New Americans is given to recognize and assist today’s immigrants and the children of immigrants. It provides a yearly stipend of $20,000 and a tuition credit of $16,000 for up to three years of graduate study. Applications are available online.

  • McDermott Minority Scholarship (December Deadline)

    McDermott Will & Emery will award a $15,000 scholarship and a position in a McDermott Summer Program to two second-year minority law students. Students must meet McDermott’s hiring criteria and demonstrate leadership, community involvement, and a commitment to improving diversity in the legal community.

  • American Association of University Women Educational Foundation (January Deadline)

    The AAUW Educational Foundation offers fellowships for the final year of law school for women of color.

  • Davis Wright Tremaine 1L Diversity Scholarship Program (January Deadline)

    Davis Wright Tremaine offers two scholarships to first year students of color, or others of diverse backgrounds. The scholarships consist of a paid summer clerkship in the firmâ’s Portland or Seattle office and $7,500 for the student’s second year educational expenses.

  • The Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Scholarship (January Deadline)

    The fellowships will be awarded to graduate school students who have outstanding undergraduate records, have demonstrated a need for financial assistance and are citizens of the United States. The amount of each Fellowship will cover the cost of tuition and a stipend for living expenses of $18,000. Applications are generally sent to Student Financial Services in November from the Harvard University Committee on General Scholarships

  • Perkins Coie 1L Diversity Fellowship

    The Perkins Coie Student Fellowship is offered to first year law students who are members of racial, ethnic, disabled, and sexual orientation minority groups. Successful applicants will receive a $7,500 academic scholarship and a paid position with Perkins Coie LLP as a summer associate.

  • K&L Gates 1L Diversity Fellowship (January Deadline)

    One first year minority law student will each receive a paid summer associate position with the firm and a $10,000 academic scholarship.

  • Tonkon Torp LLP Diversity Scholarship (January Deadline)

    The firm will offer a fellowship to a first year law student who is a member of a racial or ethnic minority group. The fellowship provides the student selected with a position as an associate for their 1L summer with Tonkon Torp. To qualify for the $7,500 academic scholarship, the student associate must return to Tonkon Torp for their 2L summer. The scholarship will be paid for the student’s final year of law school.

  • The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Academic Scholarship Program (February Deadline)

    The scholarship is open to permanent legal residents of Cook County, the greater Chicago metropolitan area or Northwest Indiana.

  • Truman Scholarships (February Deadline)

    This is a federal program, in which recipients may be nominated and selected in their junior year of college. Law students typically receive funding in their second year of law school after demonstrating in their first year that they are interested in public service.   • ABA Legal Opportunity Fund (March Deadline)
  • Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati (March Deadline)

    The Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati offers the William A. McClain Scholarship. Candidates must be an African-American Cincinnatian with leadership skills, a commitment to the Cincinnati community and financial need.

  • Black Women Lawyers Association Scholarship Application (March Deadline)

    The Black Women Lawyers Association awards scholarships of $2,500 to second and third year law students who intend to practice law in California. Recipients are selected on the basis of financial need, community service, academic achievement and legal writing ability.   • Bristol County Bar Association (March Deadline)

    The Bristol County Bar Association will offer support to a resident of Bristol County.

  • Fredrikson & Byron Foundation Minority Scholarship Program (March Deadline)

    This scholarship is available to first year minority law students. Students who are awarded a scholarship through this program are also invited to become summer associates.

  • Porzio Diversity Scholarship (March Deadline)

    The Porzio Diversity Scholarship of $5,000 supports the development of a first year law school student from New Jersey who embodies elevated values and demonstrates a commitment to academic excellence, leadership, community service and the advancement of diversity in the legal profession. Applications are generally forwarded to Student Financial Services prior to the deadline.

  • The Rhode Island Bar Foundation Scholarship Program (March Deadline)

    The Thomas F. Black, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund is a one year, nonrenewable award of $15,000 for Rhode Island residents entering their first year of law school.

  • Attorney-CPA Foundation (April Deadline)

    This scholarship is open to law students who will be entering their third year of law school who have obtained a CPA certificate. Awards range from $250 to $1,000.

  • The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (April Deadline)

    The Institute offers a scholarship of $5,000 to a US citizen of Latino descent. Applicants must also demonstrate community service and financial need.

  • Federal Circuit Bar Association Scholarships (April Deadline)

    The Federal Circuit Bar Association offers scholarships to law school students with documented financial need and demonstrated academic promise.

  • Grand Rapids Community Foundation (April Deadline)

    Warner Norcross & Judd offers a $5,000 scholarship to law school students of racial and ethnic minority heritage. Applicants must be former or current residents of Michigan.

  • Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship (April Deadline)

    The Fox Scholarship of $3,000 is given to help fund a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania resident embarking on his or her second year of law school.

  • Lawrence Bar Association (April Deadline)

    The Lawrence Bar Association offers a scholarship to law students from Lawrence, Methuen, North Andover, and Andover, in Essex County, Massachusetts.

  • New England Employee Benefits Council (April Deadline)

    The New England Benefits Council offers a renewable scholarship of up to $5,000 to a law student with a demonstrated interest in a career in the benefits field.

  • Massachusetts Association of Women Lawyers Scholarship Foundation (May Deadline)

    Massachusetts Association of Women Lawyers Scholarship Foundation MAWL offers a $1,000 scholarship to students entering their second or third years of law school. Selection is based on financial need and academic ability. Applications are generally sent to Student Financial Services in advance of the due date.

  • Alabama Law Foundation (June Deadline)

    The Cabiniss, Johnston Scholarship of $5,000 is awarded annually to an Alabama resident who will be a second year law student. Applications are available online.

  • Arthur T. Ueoka/MCBA Scholarship (June Deadline)

    The Arthur T. Ueoka/MCBA Scholarship is awarded annually to a current or entering law student who has strong Maui County ties and a compelling financial need.

  • County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey Scholarship Foundation (June Deadline)

    County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey Scholarship Foundation awards four scholarships of $2,500. Each will be awarded to New Jersey residents with financial need. Please note that each scholarship has specific eligibility requirements, as noted below. Applications are available online.
    **The Cotton Memorial Scholarship is for applicants with an interest in pursuing a career as a prosecutor with an emphasis in Domestic Violence or Hate Crimes prosecutions.
    **The Stamler Memorial Scholarship is intended for an applicant who as a sworn law enforcement officer is seeking educational advancement at the graduate level to improve his or her effectiveness in this role.
    **The Rittenhouse Memorial Scholarship is for applicants with an interest in pursuing a career as a prosecutor.
    **The Ruotolo Memorial Scholarship is for applicants with a demonstrated commitment to enhancing the rights and well- being of children through child advocacy programs.

  • Finnegan Henderson Diversity Scholarship (June Deadline)

    This award of $15,000 will be given to a minority student completing the first year of law school with financial need and a demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in intellectual property law.

  • Glenn Peters Law Scholarship (June Deadline)

    Bank Calumet offers this scholarship to permanent residents of the Northern District of Indiana for the United States District Court. Although need is considered, awards are based on past academic accomplishments and activities. Applications are generally sent to Student Financial Services in advance of the due date.

  • Marilynne Graboys Wool Scholarship (June Deadline)

    The Marilynne Graboys Wool Scholarship provides a $2,000 scholarship to women with financial need enrolled in law school. Candidates must be Rhode Island residents.

  • Iranian-American Bar Association Scholarship (June deadline)
