The Transformational Prison Project (TPP) was founded in 2013 in MCI-Norfolk, Massachusetts’ largest prison which houses the nation’s oldest population of men serving life sentences.

The first participants found healing and transformation. As influencers in the prison system, their modeling of change encouraged others to join, as well. TPP grew from MCI-Norfolk to five more MA correctional institutions—reaching thousands of incarcerated men and women.

Now, TPP is led by four formerly-incarcerated individuals who personally benefited from TPP’s programs while incarcerated. They are examples of the positive impact that TPP’s work can have on individuals, and are dedicating their lives to change the lives of others.

Next Fall, TPP is partnering with HLS to provide a pre-approved independent clinical placement for students interested in restorative justice and policy work.

A TPP clinical internship is more than just research and writing on topics of criminal law reform, parole reform and decarceration. TPP will provide six weeks of training in facilitating restorative justice circles. Interns will also have the chance to do circles with formerly incarcerated individuals.

TPP focuses on addressing how we, as individuals and as a society, can bring a stop to violence in its many forms — emotional, institutional and physical. We focus on bringing peace to individuals and systems that have experienced ongoing cycles of violence.
