2025 marks 200 years since France forced Haiti to pay an “Independence Debt” for its liberation. The debt – meant to “compensate” France for its loss of enslaved people — has kept Haiti impoverished and unstable for decades.
Join us for a panel discussion to explore the consequences of the debt 200 years later, the legal case for restitution, and Haiti’s role in the global movement for reparations for the lasting consequences of colonialism and enslavement.
Speakers:
Monique Clesca, Co-founder of Kolektif Ayisyen Afro-Desanda
Dr. Michael McEachrane, Rapporteur of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent and 2024-2025 Harvard Carr Center Racial Justice Fellow
Brian Concannon Jr., Esq., Executive Director, Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti
Moderated by Régine Théodat, Principal, Ananas Consulting
Lunch will be served.
