“You didn’t just erase a photo. You erased an entire continent.” That was the reply of Vanessa Nakate, a young climate justice activist from Uganda, when she was unceremoniously cropped from a picture of youth climate activists at the 2020 World Economic Forum in Davos. Vanessa has dedicated her life to bringing attention to Africa’s position at the frontlines of the climate crisis, launching her activism in 2018 by protesting outside the gates of Uganda’s parliament for months in response to the country’s climate inaction. Since then, she has established the Rise Up Climate Movement and brought her message global, speaking at high-profile events, including New York Climate Week last week, and serving as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She advocates for Black, Brown, and Indigenous rights in the climate movement and seeks reparations from the nations most responsible for the climate crisis. Join us for a conversation with Vanessa, moderated by Professor Aminta Ossom, about her activism journey and the advice she has for advocates in the climate justice movement.
