Russia’s assault on Mariupol left thousands of Ukrainian civilians dead and injured, trapped hundreds of thousands for weeks without basic services, and turned a thriving city into a wasteland of charred buildings and shallow graves. This event will present the findings of an in-depth investigation, conducted by Human Rights Watch, Truth Hounds, and SITU Research, that resulted in a 224-page report, survivor stories, 3D reconstructions of damaged buildings, a flow chart showing who is responsible, and more.
Ida Sawyer of Human Rights Watch and Evan Grothjan of SITU Research will elaborate on the devastation of Mariupol and the methodology of the multi-faceted project. The panelists will also explain how they plan to use this material to support prosecution of apparent war crimes. The event will be moderated by Bonnie Docherty of the HLS International Human Rights Clinic.
The event is co-sponsored by the Armed Conflict and Civilian Protection Initiative, the International Human Rights Clinic, and HLS Advocates for Human Rights. Lunch will be provided.
