OPIA’s Preparing for Summer Internship Success: Communicating Clearly with Your Supervisor

Summer internships are a time for growth and exploration, but new work environments bring a host of unknowns about expectations. Negotiating work assignments can feel like a perilous guessing game, especially during that ever-so-important “first impression” phase. Good news! There’s a quick-to-learn, easy-to-implement tool at your disposal: Clear Requests. Take charge of your summer experience by increasing your communication skills to clarify what your supervisor expects from you.

During this engaging lunchtime program, we’ll reveal and test out the three core ingredients:

• Define the Task: What, exactly, is being asked of you?

• Meet Delivery: When, precisely, is it due?

• Quantify Success: What are the specific conditions of satisfaction?

It’s easy for senior lawyers to forget you can’t read their minds and aren’t familiar with the norms of their firm or organization. You won’t need telepathy if you can harness the power of Clear Requests.

This program will be run by Betsy Miller ‘99, Chair of Cohen Milstein’s’ Public Client practice and a certified leadership coach, author, and speaker. She is a seasoned litigator and trailblazer on leadership development and culture change in the legal profession.
