Disrupting Bias in Direct Legal Services
February 18, 2025
12:15 pm - 1:30 pm
WCC, Milstein West B
Clinic students (past and present) are invited to a workshop on how we identify bias, preserve our clients’ autonomy, and act to disrupt it in direct legal services. The workshop will be facilitated by lifelong public defender, La Mer Kyle-Griffiths, the Training Division Chief at the L.A. County Public Defender’s Office. This workshop will explore the definitions and causes of bias and how bias impacts clients, lawyers, and the legal system. The workshop will provide opportunities to engage with other students in pairs and small groups and provide a set of tools for how to interrupt bias in your clinical work and future workplaces. Students will be invited to provide their feedback about the workshop at the conclusion of the session.
Lunch will be available starting at 12:00 pm. Organized by Lia Monahan of the Criminal Justice Institute, Sabi Ardalan of the Harvard Immigration and Refugee Clinic, and the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs. Please RSVP here.
