Democratic Institutions from America Unfinished: 250 Years of Law and Governance

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Association of American Law Schools (AALS) and organizers at Harvard Law School present six webinars on foundational themes explored in the book America Unfinished: 250 Years of Law and Governance, which assembles short essays from over sixty members of the Harvard Law School faculty analyzing the issues facing our country’s bold experiment in democratic governance.

This first webinar is inspired by Martha Minow’s essay “Constituting Democracy: Investing in a Virtuous Circle,” in which she argues that much of our democratic infrastructure is under attack, and that we must protect and invest in preconditions for self-governance including education, reliable public information, and safety. Webinar participants will explore the current state of our democratic institutions and the kinds of investment and care needed for meaningful self-governance going forward.
