Counterfeit Capitalism with Matt Stoller
April 12, 2023
12:15 pm - 1:30 pm
Hauser Hall; 105 Jackson Meeting Room
Matt Stoller runs the popular anti-monopoly newsletter BIG and wrote Goliath, a history of monopoly power in America. He coined the phrase Counterfeit Capitalism, which describes how monopolistic business models (like Uber and WeWork) often appear to be efficient, good or cheap for consumers – for a time – but end up destroying productive capacity on the backend, which then creates or worsens a shortage. He’ll talk about the monopolist’s playbook, how to recognize a monopoly and what to do about it. Lunch will be provided.
