New Breakout Room Feature: Let participants choose room

New Breakout Room Feature: Let participants choose room

Breaking News! Zoom has cured its springtime Achilles Heel, the Preassigned Breakout Room! On Sept. 21st, Zoom released a feature that allows students to self-select into Breakout Rooms without needing special permissions. This is a third Breakout Room setup option in addition to assigning rooms “Automatically” or “Manually”. The “Let participants choose room” breakout option allows for up to 50 Breakout Rooms to be created and, once the rooms are created and opened, students can choose which rooms to enter. Once in a Breakout Room, students are also free to move about all rooms.

To use the feature as a replacement for Preassigned Breakout Rooms, it is suggested to create a MSFT Word Document listing student assignments (for example, Chris Langdell – Room 1) and placing it on Canvas so that students are informed which room to report during class. If you would like to schedule an individual or small group session to learn more about using this new feature, please email lxt@law.harvard.edu to schedule.
