The term “citizenship” has many meanings in sociology, political theory, and law.  It can denote a relationship to a polity, a social status, an activity, a package of rights or a package of responsibilities.  This reading group will discuss both theoretical and practical perspectives on citizenship, particularly as they affect the legal construction of citizenship and nationality.  The topics to be considered may include women’s citizenship, birthright citizenship, deprivation of citizenship, and civic revival.  No prior study of immigration or nationality law is necessary.
