Abstract: On March 20, 2006, the Harvard Journal on Legislation held a public symposium addressing the diminishing social safety net for the middle class. This piece briefly presents some of the issues that were discussed during the symposium, explains their increasing relevance for the middle class, and introduces two articles by symposium panelists that address some of these issue in greater depth.
