Newly established in the fall of 2024, the HLS Writing Center is set to enrich the many cultures of writing excellence that already range across Harvard Law School. In particular, in its first year the Center will focus on building resources to support the continuing development of upper-level J.D. students as academic, legal, and professional writers. Among these resources: group workshops, practical guides, and above all, one-to-one consulting and advising sessions.
Leading the way are HLS Writing Fellows—select upper-level J.D. students who work intensively with peers while also participating in a sustained colloquium in which they explore, and actively contribute to, evolving discussions about the craft of writing and related skills that are central to the study and practice of law.
Finally, in view of the modified written work requirement for all HLS J.D. matriculants from the fall of 2023 forward, the Writing Center also supports students as they satisfy the peer review component of the Analytical Paper, suggesting review pairings for specific groups as well as generally promoting best practices in peer-to-peer work.
