On Friday, September 5, former Secretary of State Warren Christopher will speak on the role of lawyers in society, with an emphasis on the value of public service. Christopher will be interviewed by Harvard Law School Professor Carol Steiker. The conversation, entitled “Lawyer and Citizen: Serving the Public Good,” will begin at 4 p.m. in the Ames Courtroom.
“One of the foremost public servants of the last few decades will talk about crossing the public-private law divide, offering advice to the next generation of aspiring young lawyers,” said Steiker. “It is an event not to be missed.”
In addition to serving as Secretary of State under President Clinton, Christopher served as a deputy attorney general under President Lyndon Johnson and deputy secretary of state under President Jimmy Carter. In 1981 Carter awarded Christopher the Medal of Freedom for his role in negotiating the release of the U.S. hostages in Iran. Christopher also chaired the independent commission established to review the Los Angeles Police Department after the Rodney King incident.
This event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Harvard Law School Graduate Program, the Bernard Koteen Office of Public Interest Advising, and the Harvard Law School East Asian Legal Studies Program.
