On Monday, October 21, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer will speak on a number of issues that are central to the upcoming mid-term elections. Boxer is expected to address situation in Iraq, homeland security, the economy, the environment and women ‘s issues. The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 4:15 p.m. in the Ropes Gray Room in Pound Hall.
Prior to being elected to the Senate in 1993, Boxer served for 10 years in the U.S. House of Representatives. Boxer has been a prominent women ‘s rights advocate, authoring the Violence Against Women Act and receiving awards for her pro-choice advocacy. An outspoken proponent of environmental protection, Boxer is chair of the Superfund, Toxic Risks, and Waste Management subcommittee of the Committee on Environment and Public Works.
Boxer’s speech will inaugurate the Harvard Law School Democrats’ new season of events and debates. Over the past year, the club has hosted, among others, U.S. Representative Barney Frank, former U.S. Senator Chuck Robb, and a panel entitled “Jobs in Politics” that featured former Vice President Al Gore ‘s campaign press secretary and the senior counsel of the Senate Commerce Committee.
