Since June, the Harvard Law School Facilities Management Office has been restoring the roof of historic Austin Hall, salvaging up to 25% of its original Monson black slate.

Constructed in 1883, Austin Hall — commissioned by then-Dean Christopher Columbus Langdell LL.M. 1854 and designed by architect Henry Hobson Richardson — was the first building erected on the HLS campus and remains one of the oldest continuously operating buildings in the United States for teaching law.

The project will also restore architectural details documented in early drawings and 19th-century photographs. Sharp-eyed passersby may spot new copper detailing on the roof and sides, along with other features.
