On Tuesday, December 11, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer will discuss the value of public service in an address at Harvard Law School. Breyer, a 1964 graduate of HLS, has served on the Court since being appointed by former President Bill Clinton in 1994. Breyer’s lecture, sponsored by the Saturday School Program at Harvard Law School, will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Ames Courtroom in Austin Hall. For those unable to attend the event in person, the speech will be webcast live.
“Justice Breyer’s career exemplifies the best in public service,” said Professor Charles Ogletree, founder and faculty director of the Saturday School program. “To have someone who has risen so high in the legal profession speak about public service is a high moment for the Saturday School program.”
From 1967 through 1994, Breyer taught at Harvard Law School where he was known as a vocal advocate of programs that foster public service, including loan forgiveness for graduates entering the public sector, and the School’s extensive clinical programs.
Established in 1988 by Ogletree, Saturday School provides a forum for students to engage in constructive dialogue with professors, legal practitioners, elected officials, judges, and others.
