President Barack H. Obama ’91 nominated Chai R. Feldblum ’85 to the position of commissioner of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Monday, Sept. 14.
A leading advocate of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, Feldblum assisted in the drafting and negotiation of the Employment Nondiscrimination Act. She has also worked to improve conditions of workplace flexibility as co-director of Georgetown University Law Center’s Workplace Flexibility 2010.
Feldblum has served as a professor of law at Georgetown since 1991. She founded the Law Center’s Federal Legislation and Administrative Clinic, a training center for aspiring legislative lawyers.
She has also served as legislative counsel to the AIDS Project of the American Civil Liberties Union. In this capacity, she played a leading role in the drafting of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as well as in the passage of the ADA Amendments Act of 2008.
Feldblum received a B.A. from Barnard College. After graduating from HLS, she went on to clerk for Judge Frank Coffin on the First Circuit Court of Appeals and Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun.
