Salary Range: Unpaid; Educational Law School Credit Only

Location: New York, New York (It is anticipated that the externs will work on site, dependent on NYS/DOH & MTA guidelines. If the externship is virtual or a combination of on-site/virtual, then access to the Internet is required for this externship.)
Hours: Hours are variable, but at least 15 hours per week will be required.
The Office of the MTA Inspector General (“MTA/OIG”) has two openings for an unpaid law student extern during the Spring 2023. The MTA/OIG is seeking to recruit creative and hard-working law students with exceptional writing and analytical skills, strong advocacy skills, an understanding of stakeholder engagement and an interest in public service. Attention to detail, self-initiative, and a team-oriented approach are also very important for the successful candidate. The MTA/OIG also prefers qualified applicants with a demonstrated interest in public corruption subject matters, though extensive experience in these fields is not necessarily required. Externs must be able to obtain law school credit for this externship.
The Office of the MTA Inspector General
The Office of the MTA Inspector General (MTA/OIG) is a New York State Authority created as an independent oversight entity to review the operations of the MTA and its constituent agencies: the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), Metro-North Commuter Railroad (MNR), the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA), MTA Bridges & Tunnels (TBTA), MTA Bus Company, Staten Island Rapid Transit and MTA Construction & Development (C&D). The MTA/OIG performs audits and conducts investigations into complaints from any source, including commuters and members of the public who access our MTA transit system, or upon its own initiative. It is the mission of the MTA/OIG to promote safety, economy and efficiency in MTA agencies and programs while also detecting and deterring waste, fraud, abuse and misconduct through these audits and investigations. The MTA/OIG does not work alone; through the years the MTA/OIG has forged effective partnerships with other investigative and prosecutorial agencies at the local, state and federal levels as well as with the conscientious and dedicated managers and staff of the MTA itself.
The MTA/OIG staff is comprised of investigative attorneys, auditors, investigators, administrative, IT and executive staff.
Under the direction of the General Counsel or her designee, responsibilities include conducting research on relevant cases and other substantive legal or policy issues, analyzing data and information relating to investigative matters, drafting legal memoranda and attending virtual meetings with the General Counsel and other members of the Legal and Investigative staffs.

- Attend virtual meetings with the General Counsel and other members of the Legal and Investigative staffs.
- Must be a law student at an accredited law school.
- 2L or 3L preferred.
- Strong computer skills with the ability to operate in a Microsoft Office 365 environment.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with MS Office Outlook, Word and Excel required.
