Dissertation

My dissertation examines the history of the postwar international legal order for regulating commerce. It breaks from conventional historiography that tends to trace this history as the rise of an international liberal order, shaped through a conflict between the desire to entrench rules and that to retain power. Instead, I argue that the key struggle that animated the development postwar international law lay between imperial, counter-imperial and anti-imperial imaginations about international politics. Partisans in this struggle were neither ‘liberals’ committed to rules of law, nor ‘realists’ viewing law as epiphenomena. Instead, I read their arguments as re-enacting rich debates in modern political theory – about the commercial basis of peace, the possibilities of a liberal world constitution, and the justness a cosmopolitan world order – within a new context of extensive decolonization and economic interdependence.
