Sue Hendrickson is a Global Technology Governance Fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society and the former Executive Director of the Center. Her work focus on digital technologies, data, AI, and other emerging and disruptive technology and the implications for democracy, human rights, and societal well-being. She regularly advises global government and corporate leaders on the responsible deployment and governance of technology and helps drive critical inquiry, global collaboration, and policy solutions around technology.

Her experience tackling complex intellectual property, legal, commercial, and public policy issues in emerging tech spans three decades and encompasses a wide array of technologies, including social media, AI, communications and networking technologies, autonomous systems, biotech, fintech, digital education, semiconductors, Web 3.0, and AR/VR/XR technologies. She has extensive experience representing leading innovators and other organizations in connection with cutting-edge intellectual property issues and the development and commercialization of new products, initiatives, programs and technologies. Sue has forged numerous deals and multi-stakeholder alliances enabling leading international and civil society organizations, businesses, innovators, policy makers, investors, and philanthropists to embrace the promise and mitigate risks of emerging technologies. Sue has helped bring to market a wide array of novel products and initiatives, including digital media platforms, mobile technologies, virtual assistants, software apps, AI/ML technologies, gene therapies, enhanced analytic tools, medical devices, digital health products, connected technologies, and consumer electronics.

Sue has been recognized as a leader in the field by a wide variety of publications including, in Chambers, as one of the Leading Lawyers in America for Technology Law, as one of the Top 250 Women in IP, and as the Best Lawyers’ – “Technology Lawyer of the Year” in Washington, DC. Sue regularly speaks and advises on emerging issues involving technology and intellectual property.

She is on the board of Human Rights First and an advisor to its Innovation Lab. She also serves on the board of KID Museum, the largest dedicated maker education space in the country. She served on the Atlantic Council’s Task Force for a Trustworthy Future Web and is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professional’s AI Governance Advisory Board. Prior to Berkman Klein, Sue was a partner at Arnold & Porter, where she co-headed the Technology Transactions and Life Sciences Transactions practices. Her legal practice focused on intellectual property technology transactions, including complex collaborations, licensing deals, strategic investments, public private partnerships, development programs and joint ventures.

Sue is a graduate of Harvard College, Harvard Law School and Harvard Kennedy School, and was an editor on the Harvard Law Review.
