What’s Going on with Greenland? ILJ Lunch Talk
April 21, 2026
12:20 pm - 1:15 pm
WCC 2004
In a recent press conference on Iran, President Trump stated that: “It all began with, if you want to know the truth, Greenland”. The comment refers to a debate that has resurfaced repeatedly in recent years. But what exactly is the deal with Greenland?
In 2019, the Trump administration openly raised the possibility of the United States purchasing Greenland from Denmark. As Greenland’s strategic importance grows, questions about its political and legal future are at the center of international attention.
Join the International Law Journal for a lunch talk on 4/21 in WCC 2004 that brings together three distinguished perspectives to unpack what is at stake. Ole Spiermann, partner at Danish law firm Bruun & Hjejle and former Professor of International Law at the University of Copenhagen will be joined by HLS Professors Noah Feldman and David Kennedy. Together, they will reflect on constitutional and institutional questions, locate the Trump administration’s rhetoric in a broader international context, and consider how law and shifting global power shape the way territory is contested and imagined today.
