Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican tradition that honors the memory of our loved ones who have passed away. Families and communities create an ofrenda, or altar, decorated with flowers, candles, pictures, and favorite foods of those who are no longer with us. It is a way to celebrate their lives, share stories, and keep their memory alive through love and joy. This year, the Harvard Animal Law Society and Alianza invite the HLS community to join us in creating a collective ofrenda.
Please email your pictures of your loved ones (human or nonhuman) to animallaw@mail.law.harvard.edu before Monday, Oct. 27. We will print and frame each picture and include it on the ofrenda as part of our campus celebration.
Come visit the ofrenda, share stories, and enjoy snacks on October 29 and 30 at the Fireside Student Lounge (WCC). After 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 30, you are welcome to take your framed photo home as a gift. Let’s honor our loved ones together and celebrate the connections—human/human and human/animal—that continue beyond life.
