Debriefing Cisco v. Doe: The U.S. Supreme Court and International Human Rights

Over the summer, the Supreme Court — with its ruling in Cisco v. Doe — closed the door on recognizing modern international human rights law claims under the Alien Tort Statute, overturning the Court’s Sosa v. Alvarez-Machain decision and reversing a line of cases dating to 1980. This panel will examine the reasoning and implications of the Supreme Court’s decision, including how it is affecting pending cases in lower federal courts and discussing what alternative pathways remain available in U.S. courts for accountability for human rights violations.
