Sixteen years after the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Citizens United v. FEC, the constitutional battle over money in politics is far from over. Join the Federalist Society for a discussion with Alan Gura, the constitutional litigator best known for successfully arguing District of Columbia v. Heller before the Supreme Court, and Harvard Law Professor Stephen Sachs. The discussion will examine state legislative efforts to challenge or circumvent Citizens United, the First Amendment protections afforded to political spending, and whether states can constitutionally restrict the influence of money in elections. Is Citizens United a necessary vindication of political speech, or has it placed democratic self-government beyond the reach of meaningful reform? Lunch will be served.
