Building a Career in Cyber Law: A Prosecutor’s Perspective

Please join OPIA for a community discussion with Wasserstein Fellow James Yoon, Acting Assistant Deputy Chief of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section, on building a career in public service at the intersection of law and technology. Speaking in his personal capacity, James will draw on his experience as a government lawyer to discuss the opportunities, challenges, and career paths available to lawyers interested in cyber law. James will share wisdom about entering the field of a rapidly evolving area of law and offer practical advice on building relevant skills and developing technical fluency without needing a computer science background.

James Yoon is Acting Assistant Deputy Chief of the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section at the U.S. Department of Justice, helping to oversee federal investigations and prosecutions involving ransomware, computer hacking, theft of trade secrets, digital piracy, trademark counterfeiting, and illicit use of cryptocurrency. He previously served as the International Computer Hacking & Intellectual Property Attorney Advisor for Asia, stationed at the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong through the U.S. Department of State. Prior to that, James held various roles at the U.S. Department of Justice, including senior counselor to the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division, senior trial attorney in the Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section, prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Honors Attorney in the Antitrust Division. James is a graduate of Yale University and Cornell Law School.
