Join the HLS Advocates for Human Rights, the WLA Clerkship Committee, and SALSA for a lunch talk with Justice Indu Malhotra, former justice of the India Supreme Court, who will be joining us on Zoom. With over 40 years of experience and one of the few women to ever sit on the India Supreme Court, she will discuss some of her Supreme Court opinions and her career trajectory as a trailblazer and advocate.
Indu Malhotra wrote a concurring opinion in the matter of Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India (2018), which held the criminalization of same-sex sexual intercourse between consenting adults in private unconstitutional. She was also the first female lawyer to be elevated to the Supreme Court directly from the bar (instead of being elevated from a High Court) and has been one of the few female judges in the history of the Indian Supreme Court. After retiring from the Court in 2021, she has continued to hone her expertise and practice as an independent arbitrator.
