A Conversation on the Joy of Intellectual Travel: Pursuing Japanese and Comparative Legal Studies

November 2, 2026

12:20 pm - 1:20 pm

East Asian Legal Studies Event:

Curtis J. Milhaupt
William F. Baxter-Visa International Professor of Law
Stanford Law School
Senior Fellow, by courtesy, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies

If you are interested in pursuing academic research or a legal career related to Japanese law or comparative legal studies, we warmly invite you to a conversation with Professor Curtis Milhaupt from Stanford Law School, along with other like-minded students and HLS faculty. What are the potential pathways for students to pursue these interests, in academia or in legal practice? What is the future direction of the field? We welcome attendees—particularly students and early-career academics—to share their reasons for being interested in Japanese and comparative legal studies, and their professional goals.

A light lunch will be served. Registration is required. Please use this form to register. As space is limited, we recommend that you submit it soon. This event is limited to HUID holders.

Curtis J. Milhaupt is an internationally recognized expert on comparative corporate governance, the legal systems of East Asia (particularly Japanese law), and state capitalism. Prior to his Stanford appointment in 2018, Professor Milhaupt held chaired professorships in comparative corporate law and Japanese law at Columbia Law School, where he served on the faculty for nearly two decades. Prior to entering academia, Professor Milhaupt practiced corporate law in New York and Tokyo with a major law firm. He also conducted graduate studies in both law and international relations at the University of Tokyo on fellowships under the auspices of the Japanese Ministry of Education, the Social Science Research Council, and the Japan Foundation.

This event is co-sponsored by the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations.
