Fall 2024 • Reading Group
Building Community: Cultivating Connection Through Dialogue
Prerequisite: None
Exam Type: No Exam
In this reading group, we will consider the power of dialogue to build bridges, foster empathy, and inspire collective action. Studying the art and science of connection, we will strengthen our capacity to navigate complex conversations, challenge assumptions, and create inclusive spaces where everyone feels heard and valued.
A deep dive into readings and practices in effective communication, facilitation, and community-building, this reading group will enhance our ability to:
- Facilitate meaningful dialogue: Learning to guide conversations that are both challenging and constructive.
- Build empathy and understanding: Cultivating a deep appreciation for varied perspectives and experiences.
- Foster a sense of belonging: Creating a supportive community where everyone feels connected and valued.
Moving from theory into practice, we’ll consider how we might apply what we’ve learned to strengthen our campus culture in ways that deepen mutual care, respect, and inclusivity, exploring innovative projects that foster open dialogue and social connection.
If you’re passionate about leading community-building conversations, you might also consider combining your participation in this reading group with facilitation practice through HNMCP’s Backstory initiative. An opportunity to convene small group conversations about how our experiences inform our perspectives, it will enable you to refine your dialogue skills, build meaningful connections, and contribute to a more positive campus community.
Note: This reading group will meet on the following dates: 9/11, 9/25, 10/9, 10/23, 11/6, 11/20
